Continuing the expansion of The Outwaters universe, Robbie Banfitch has produced a second short, File VL-624, which is another companion piece following on from Card Zero.
The previous short showed Robbie’s vulnerable side as he navigated a budding relationship while dealing with his own issues and prepping for the ill-fated trip into the Mojave desert in the feature film.
This short again is pitched as police evidence, although this was recovered six years later (in 2023).
Instead of being beforehand, we open in the desert, with a torch searching the darkness, and already this feels much akin to the horrors of The Outwaters.
This is more candid, with snapshots of the experience, but with that signature sound design which made the film quite a jarring vision.
There is connective tissue here to Card Zero but more with The Outwaters, giving us more glimpses of those haunting visuals.
File VL-624 is an essential piece of The Outwaters jigsaw.
