Alex Woodruff and Pineapple Cut Pictures have wrapped production on Woodwork.
This dystopian-thriller short film is inspired by the harrowing real-life story currently unfolding in Atlanta, and is the second installment in Woodruff’s 94 Universe of films, after 2024’s Thomasville.
In Woodwork, we follow as an estranged couple navigates their break-up as a militarized police force closes in. The story dramatizes actual events that have taken place during the Stop Cop City Movement in Atlanta, and imagines what the future may look like if this struggle continues. Belkis Terán, mother of the slain activist Manuel Esteban Paez Terán, also known as Tortuguita, spent time on set with the filmmakers as they produced Woodwork. Afterward, she reflected on the potential for art to impact this critical movement. My hope for this film is to share Manuel’s legacy – that is to serve people.”
Attached to star in the project are Adetinpo Thomas (The Color Purple, Hawkeye) and Stephen Ruffin (Snowfall, Thomasville). Local Atlanta leaders have joined the project’s core producing team, including Rev. Keyanna Jones, a magnetic community organizer whose Stop Cop City speeches have caught fire online. While on set, Rev. Jones addressed the cast and crew with with a message of support and encouragement. “ I am honored to say I was able to create something that will help people understand what we’ve been fighting for.”
Using these initial stories as a launching pad, Woodruff is now in development on the feature film, 94. This project will further explore the sociopolitical themes already established in Thomasville and Woodwork.
