What Kind of Mother by Clay McLeod Chapman review

Read our verdict of new Southern Gothic novel What Kind of Mother by Clay McLeod Chapman.

There is a tradition, somewhat conservative, that once you reach a certain age you started to consider the possibility of creating a family.

While this is not always the case today, this is a plot thread that weaves throughout Clay McLeod Chapman’s drama come body horror What Kind of Mother.

Firstly the novel feels very much in that true crime vein, as single mother Madi return to her hometown and re-ignites a relationship with a widowed father (Henry) whose son went missing five years prior.

As Madi becomes entangled in Henry’s complicated life, she finds out there are forces at work here that none of them can truly understand.

What Chapman does so well is create vivid and harrowing images as What Kind of Mother becomes a haunting and quite unique body horror tale with a hint of Lovecraft to it.

This feels original and fresh, and goes to places seldom seen in horror fiction today.

What Kind of Mother caught me off guard and quickly became an engrossing read.

What Kind of Mother by Clay McLeod Chapman is available now from Titan Books.
