The Night Jane Went Insane review

By Dana Berry

Jane, played by Brinke Stevens (Slumber Party Massacre), is a sci-fi hipster minding her own nerdy business until voices start calling her name through the electronics. The voices are none other than Brinke Stevens’ real-life scream queen besties, Linnea Quigley and Michelle Bauer.

My initial thought was that they were calling her out to play in Cougar Cult 2 (“Cougars Eat Their Cubs… Again!”) but it is actually an invitation to “get outta this crummy place”, either being her retro Hollywood apartment and/or this mortal coil, and join them in another dimension, let’s call it Static World.

After being teased once and left out, sad Jane discovers that all she had to do was eat some toast (“bread! bread!”). She then twirls forth into Static World and away from the conspiracy-ridden end of humanity.

This short from the prolific Zach Lorkiewicz falls into the experimental end of horror and sci-fi. In spite of its barren plot, it’s rather entertaining. If Cronenberg and Lynch shared a thought bubble about a woman named Jane, this might be it.

The film is well-shot and edited with a terrific sound design. Brinke Stevens manages to give the role some depth despite having two lines of dialogue.
