The long gestated documentary on sci-fi classic RoboCop has morphed into a 4-part series, which is now available on the Icon Film Channel and Screambox stateside.
The justification for having this become a series instead of one big doc is there for all to see as no stone is left unturned about the film and its legacy.
Anyone who is still alive is part of the doc series, from Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, and Paul Verhoeven to Kurtwood Smith is here with the only glaring omission being Rob Bottin, who doesn’t do publicity for his previous work these days and is supposedly working in real estate these days.
From Peter Weller’s libido going wild on set to stunts gone awry to everyone falling out with Verhoeven at some stage.
The political commentary is discussed in detail, every special effect plus how the music, the sound effects and all of the gore were created. While Bottin isn’t present, his work is acknowledged in detail by the team he worked with, including detailed looks at the ‘melting man’ sequence, the execution of Murphy and everything in between.
Weller and Verhoeven’s insights are key as they pull no punches on the production, while Ray Wise provides plenty of comedy relief.
What RoboDoc ultimately captures is the entire process of filmmaking, the good, the bad and the ugly.
RoboDoc is released on 18 December on Blu-Ray, and is available now on Screambox in the US and Icon Film Channel.
