Not just limited to horror films, it is often said that animals such as dogs and cats can hear things that the human ear can’t detect.
Whether this is ghosts or another supernatural entity, I suppose we will never know.
In his new short Howl at the Dead, director Gregg Bishop puts these theories to the test, pitting man’s best friend against the undead.
In this instance, it is our dog Paws who unknowingly uncovers a corpse in a family’s new home thus triggering a series of chaotic events.
After his ball is thrown down the hall, Paws is suddenly spooked by something that may or may not be lurking in the shadows. After being framed by the demon he is banished from the house, while the pet cat and parrot both prove rather useless to the impending threat.
Despite being a horror film, Howl at the Dead carries a tonne of heart mainly brought on by the performance of Paws, who is incredible.
This is a dog who will protect his family at any cost.
There is even a punch-the-air moment, who knew horror could be so exhilarating?
Howl at the Dead screens as part of Soho Horror Film Festival 2023.
