When it comes to getting clean there are plenty of methods employed.
Some people go cold turkey, others seek therapy or some kind of clinical treatment, and in some cases, they try everything but it’s never a guarantee of sobriety.
Horror is often at its best when it deals with addiction, but gives it demons and supernatural elements y’know just for fun.
In Alex Hanno’s Detox, we follow a woman challenged with a digital detox, which means disengaging from all forms of digital engagement. To facilitate this, she decides to take a getaway in an isolated location with only her therapy tape for company.
When her detox pretty much collapses straight away, she is hunted by a malevolent force that has some bad intentions for her.
Hanno’s short has sort of a hypnotic and dream-like quality to it, where the reality isn’t what it seems; a dystopia is the norm.
Detox does take a slight tonal shift but weirdly it feels earned and makes for a unique short.
Detox screens as part of Soho Horror Film Festival 2023.
