I Tried an Acid From Outer Space review

I must admit I didn’t know what to expect from the extravagantly titled I Tried An Acid From Outer Space.

You may be thinking this is gonna be a schlocky and bizarre B movie, but surprisingly the film has a lot to say about bigger issues.

Filmmaker Alberto Genovese has told the tale using 2D animation, which helps with more outlandish ideas that would have been tricky to pull off with actors and special effects.

We follow Allesandro, a vicious boss who would gladly sack 500 staff in one day if it meant he got his next fix snorted up his nose as soon as possible.

While looking for his next fix, his chat with a dealer is intercepted by an alien race who provides him with a hallucinogenic drug which turns his world upside down. We see scenes of him eviscerating women who have unknowingly stumbled into this game, but we aren’t entirely sure if he’s tripping or if this is really happening.

Despite being animated, this is a film very much for adults with plenty of drug use and sex, plus it feels like a commentary on the greed of capitalism and how it can make greedy men do desperate things, it’s just here that there are consequences.

There are even some inter-alien politics to deal with, which recalls to a lesser extent something like Psycho Goreman.

The film clocks in at around 68 minutes, which is impressive for a 2D animated feature, although I did wonder whether this may have worked as a short web series instead.

I suppose the question is, does Genovese want us to sympathise with this less than stellar individual because of the actions that appear to be thrust on him because of taking the alien drugs?

The finale while quite hallucogenic, does veer into established sci-fi/alien abduction tropes and may lose some viewers.

`Look out for I Tried An Acid From Outer Space on the film festival circuit.
