The rule of sequels, especially in horror is to go bigger, and more outrageous.
Chucky creator Don Mancini clearly got the memo, with his killer doll franchise now heading to the White House.
Admittedly, I found the second series of Chucky a tonal and rather all-over-the-place mess, but Mancini has decided on a soft reboot here in a new setting.
Chucky has now been adopted by the son of none other than the President of the United States, played by the returning Devon Sawa. While during these first 4 episodes, it is not wholly clear what Charles Lee Ray’s grand scheme is, we are harking back to Curse of Chucky territory with Chucky only striking when necessary and dare I say trying to create some tension.
As for Lexy, Jake and Devon, they are now under the care of their teacher Miss Fairchild and seem to have moved on their own ways from the last season until Chucky comes calling. After being the strongest new element of the series, the trio are slightly spare parts here, but here’s hoping they get thrust into the limelight in the fall-out of the mid-season finale.
For the comedy look no further than Tiffany aka Jennifer Tilly, who is now on trial for multiple murders and her trial and subsequent sentencing are a joy to be hold, as its clear Tilly is having a ball.
Perhaps unlike Season 2, Chucky Season 3 takes on a new theme, with Chucky threatened with actual death after losing his voodoo powers by very comical means.
Its a solid four episode run which is rounded off with the show’s annual Halloween episode which is a gory delight in so many ways and leaves the door wide open as to how the season will continue now the strikes have ended.
Chucky is back, and has made the White House his own.
Chucky season 3 screened on SyFy.
