As alien invasion theories go, you won’t find many as bonkers as depicted in Jack Lesarge’s Rec Volton.
A couple’s night-in watching schlocky sci-fi is interrupted by a knock at the door, but little does the man know he could be answering the door to something from another galaxy. At least they were polite enough to knock I suppose.
From here an alien hunter, the titular Rex Volton, is sent back to Earth to help deal with the invasion; it almost feels like a slightly less camp version of Suburban Commando.
With its synthy soundtrack and neon light from every corner, Rex Volton is clearly designed for the retro synth-wave audience who just can’t get enough of this colour, and shameless heroes with one-liners to burn.
These aliens feel like a cross between something from Star Wars and a schlocky series like Red Dwarf. There is a minor plot twist here though, and Rex is given a whole new scenario to conquer in no time at all.
Rex Volton is a throwback that doesn’t outstay its welcome and hints at a wider story arc if given the opportunity in the future.
Rex Volton screens as part of the Toronto After Dark Film Festival 2023.
