Erik Bloomquist talks new slasher Founder’s Day

Prolific genre director Erik Bloomquist is back with brand new political slasher Founder’s Day, with the film set to screen at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival later this week.

We caught up with Erik to find out more –

How was the writing process with Carson?

We have a really great hive-mind approach coloured by our own unique sensibilities. It’s great that we can verbalize things that the other may be feeling.

Was it your aim to create a film in keeping with modern-day themes?

We really want to touch on the chaos that ensues in the tug-of-war for power, especially within an ecosystem in which the personal stakes are so high.

Did you want to create something tonally different from She Came From the Woods?

We did! Though, as usual, we always want to make sure there is an undercurrent of mischief, intrigue and fun.

What attracts you to the slasher sub-genre?

The playfulness and intrigue. The spectacle. And as Commissioner Peterson might say, “the puzzle box of it all”.

You also have an acting role in Founders Day, how tricky is this to juggle with directing?

I actually find it quite refreshing to be able to do both. It’s great to direct from within a scene but it also keeps me from fatiguing at one or the other. I love seeing and contributing to the movie from all angles.

Intermedium is also in post-production, what can you tell us about this film?

It is a lovely supernatural romantic musical — tinged with the “Golden Age” but very much set in the present day! Think Casper meets La La Land.

Catch Founder’s Day at Toronto After Dark Film Festival 2023.
