Grimmfest 2023

Deleter (Grimmfest 2023) review

Those of us who have done desk jobs instead of a manual job have all had the boring, soul-destroying admin job.

That one where you just turn up, clock in, mentally switch off and then clock off and pay it no mind.

The job of our central protagonist in Deleter, has the task of analysing and deleting suspect content from the internet. When she is told to get rid of a video depicting the death of her co-worker, this starts a chain of events that will make her choose whether to remain silent or speak out against dark forces that are at work (literally).

Shot composition is crucial here too, as Deleter urges you to check the entire frame for things that don’t

Given the surveillance element of Deleter, the film really goes out of its way to not bow down to established tropes. There is a commentary around what is deemed appropriate for audiences, and why victims need to be listened to before anyone else.

Director Mikhail Red isn’t afraid to get dark either and really twists the knife in a bleak and harrowing conclusion. This is the perfect, unnerving way to round off a day of Grimmfest screenings.

Deleter screens as part of Grimmfest 2023.
