Let’s be honest, a majority of horror fans love a good ghost story.
There are many ways to tell such a narrative, from violent entities, to say, Casper the friendly ghost.
Nacho Solana’s short There Are No Ghosts puts the focus on Andrea, a young woman who firmly believes in the spirit world, but not in a traditional way. She identifies them as echoes of someone who once was and not ‘ghosts’ persay.
Andrea isn’t conventional, simply having a daytime can of beer, as the phone rings for her latest paranormal case. She’s no Egon Spengler, at least, on paper.
Andrea’s take is more as the voices of these people/spirits charging about this house for apparently no purpose.
There Are No Ghosts is a more sobering look at the ghost story, with a raw edge that suggests conflict in the home that may not solely be related to the new visitors. There is a heartfelt nature to this short, with its central performances from Andrea and the mother who called her in, as particular highlights.
There Are No Ghosts asks what are ghosts if not our own minds trying to rewrite or make sense of the past.
There Are No Ghosts screens as part of Grimmfest 2023.
