Memories of the Moon (Grimmfest 2023) review

Can you imagine a time when the moon has not risen in 24 years?

It may seem like a bizarre motif, but this is the jumping off point for Antoine Dricot’s Memories of the Moon. But what has its absence meant for society since?

We follow Elodie and Sophia, who meet at a house party and establish a relationship, but this is a night where everything is not what it seems…

There is a whimsical and hopeful vibe to Memories of the Moon, as it feels like Elodie and Sophia’s intertwining was almost fate.

This quickly descends into nightmare logic, as Elodie starts to think every she is experiencing could be an illusion or a trick.

While it often conveys a creeping mood, Memories of the Moon is slightly bloated at 24 minutes, and feels like it could have been edited down to tell a sharper tale.

Memories of the Moon screens as part of Grimmfest 2023.
