Feeling plucked straight out ofthe 80s, Death School is graphic novelist Jason Miller’s tribute to the golden age of the slasher.
Miller clearly knows all the tropes and goes more the route of Friday the 13th over Halloween but with hints of other franchises such as Maniac Cop.
We begin in 1988 when Edgar Wilson, a tormented young teenager is invited to a rooftop Halloween party, and following a prank wrong, falls to his apparent death.
Fast forward a good 20 years later, and the children of the partygoers are planning their own Halloween party in the same spot, just as a number of killings start cutting through the town.
Miller’s story is fantastically gory; giving Jason Voorhees and Art the Clown a run for their money in the bloodshed department. Like the aforementioned killers, the returning Edgar loves to impale, maim, amputate, and even decapitate his victims.
The hulking look Edgar takes on is very imposing and makes him a credible threat to these unknowing teens.
Miller is also not afraid to have fun, throwing in a pair of stoner janitors for a bit of lighthearted relief amongst the slayings. Oh, I almost forgot there is a detective named Atkins too, who bears a striking resemblance to Tom Atkins plus what feels like the Keystone cops from Halloween 5, for better or for worse…
Fans of the 80s slasher will lap up Death School.
