One of the questions that plagues found footage horror is; why are they recording everything?
Well, Puzzle Box, which recently screened at Popcorn Frights Film Festival may have a satisfying answer. We follow Kate, a recovering addict and her sister Olivia, who are going to a backwoods cabin to help Kate get sober.
Upon arrival, the girls are locked out of the house, so much for a positive AirBnb rating, right?
When they get into the house things only get stranger, as they keep hearing footsteps and it becomes apparent that there is someone else in the house too.
The house it turns out is some sort of micro vortex/haunted house where the laws of time and space simply don’t add up.
Once we get an idea of what’s going on Puzzle Box does unravel a little, choosing spectacle over solutions. Some of its tricks become quite repetitive and it worked better when it was a character study on Kate, as a drug and alcohol abuser.
Puzzle Box is a mixed bag, but there is enough there to add it to the intriguing and ambitious pile of found footage horror.
