The mine of fan films when it comes to Friday the 13th and Halloween does seem quite saturated; but the one franchise that hasn’t got many fan spin-offs is A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Whether this is down to the complex makeup job for Freddy or other factors, there are only a handful of Nightmare fan films worth shouting about.
After starting a sequel chapter on the Black Christmas series Canadian creative Dave McRae is donning, what has to be the most impressive Freddy makeup to date from the indie filmmaking world. This continuation of the New Nightmare also brings back Miko Hughes’ Dylan Porter for another round with Krueger.
Dylan’s New Nightmare does what you expect of a fan film, with a host of homages, some to the point of overkill to what we know of the Krueger world; but this feels at its best when it tries to tread new ground. Case and point, where Freddy has an ‘appointment’ with a psychiatrist, which carries that wry dark humour of Freddy whilst being quite brutal.
Hughes is dependable as Dylan but we don’t really get a full idea of where he is at in this timeline or how and why Freddy has chosen to return now. I can’t knock the production value of what is ultimately a crowdfunded film but it did leave me with more questions and a more abrupt ending than was expected.
