Pareidolia (Frightfest 2023) review

Many readers of this site may recognise the name of Aaron Truss from the excellent Cult Of VHS documentary which screened at Frightfest 2022.

Truss has now returned with the horror short Pareidolia, starring amongst others Amityville II star Diane Franklin.

If you’ve never heard of pareidolia before, its definition is as follows:

Pareidolia is the tendency for perception to impose a meaningful interpretation on a nebulous stimulus, usually visual, so that one sees an object, pattern, or meaning where there is none.

In basic terms, it’s seeing something that may not be there.

We follow Franklin’s Sinead as she looks to explain and solve this mystery condition, while possibly being stalked by evil entities.

A side plot also involves a local priest, who may have a connection to Sinead, who senses evil within her walls and takes it upon himself to help vanquish it.

Pareidolia feels like stripped-back horror, which carries a real chilling atmosphere throughout. Unlike some horrors today that rely on neon lights, this short uses shadow and frames to craft its scares.

Pareidolia screens as part of Frightfest 2023.
