I Am Monsters (Frightfest 2023) review

The name of Nicholas Vince is synonymous with the work of Clive Barker during the 1980s.

This is a fact that Vince willingly acknowledges during his one man show turned documentary I Am Monsters, which is not just about his life in acting but also the world he grew up and lived in.

He has made a comeback to acting in recent years with a slew of independent horror projects, whilst most recently appearing at HorrorCon UK with his fellow cenobites.

I Am Monsters plays out like a series of visual essays which given an intriguing insight to the world of acting but also Vince’s journey of growing up as a gay man in Thatcher’s Britain.

We hear in explicit detail about the jaw surgery he undertook plus the harrowing accounts of living through the AIDS crisis.

Vince is a warm and calm storyteller and his story is certainly unique, plus while he does acknowledge film roles in Hellraiser and Nightbreed, this is more about him than his roles.

I Am Monsters screens as part of Frightfest 2023.
