Herd (Frightfest 2023) review

Herd is a world where zombies exist but like so many tales of this ilk, perhaps its the humans who are the problem.

We follow a same-sex couple who are going on a canoeing trip, looking to fix the issues that are plaguing their relationship.

After a freak accident where Alex, one of the women breaks their foot, they are found by a group of local people in this desolate village, which happens to be Jamie, the other women’s childhood home and then things start to get very interesting.

Herd, feels like a combustible melting pot, where we slowly learn more about Jamie’s past and maybe how she ran rather walked away from this place.

It’s effectively like being caught between a rock and a hard place with the zombies outside some people with particular ideals inside plus Alex’s broken foot to deal with.

This feels like a contained pandemic-style story, where people who may not have chosen to interact previously are forced together for a greater good – but what if they simply can’t co-exist?

The main takeaway from Herd is how conflict, in some way can bring issues to the surface and help resolve them in some ways.

Herd maybe classed as a zombie movie, but it is much more complex and more entertaining than your standard survival thriller.

Herd screens as part of Frightfest 2023.

Herd had its World Premiere at FrightFest 2023 and the UK home ent. release follows on 23rd October 2023 (High Fliers)
