I have to admit right off the bat, I wasn’t expecting too much from Spookt but was pleasantly surprised.
Tony Reames’ new feature blends the world of amateur paranormal investigators with the motifs of the town where bad things go on, but not everyone talks about them.
We follow two investigators, one a brash YouTube sensation and the other an amateur in the small town of Greenville, which is haunted by the crimes of a doctor who enjoyed experimenting on patients before his death.
Claire is a timid librarian whereas Rachel is outspoken and from the city, but together they become the heartbeat of the film as they both begin investigating the Gibson House, which is the former residence of Dr. Byler (played by Eric Roberts).
Spookt is in large parts quite restrained until it wants to turn up the intensity and creates some genuinely creepy imagery and atmosphere.
There are winks to films such as The Changeling but also Spookt has a meaner tone, with the horrifying truth about Byler’s experiments not becoming clear until it may be too late.
This could be a favourite for Frightfest audiences.
Spookt screens as part of Frightfest 2023.
