The Dive (Frightfest 2023) review

Over recent years we have had a new breed of micro disaster film, with a small number of people caught in seemingly impossible scenarios.

Films such as 47 Metres Down and Fall have seen people caught at the bottom of the ocean and stuck 2000 feet in the air. In terms of DNA, The Dive, a remake of Swedish thriller Breaking Surface, goes back to the bottom of the ocean, as a woman becomes trapped at the bottom of the sea after an avalanche crushes one of her legs.

The clocking is ticking as her oxygen begins to run out, and her diving mate and sister must find a way to free her.

The heartbeat of the film is in the sibling relationship, and we see flashbacks to their past, which add extra stakes as their relationship appears built on a web of lies.

Technically the film looks incredible, and it certainly earns its catharsis in the end.

The Dive screens as part of Frightfest 2023.
