The Blue Drum (HollyShorts Film Festival 2023) review

Grief can do many things to a person.

Whether it’s physical or mental, horror has a way of magnifying these changes and most of the time accentuating them into something dark and disturbing.

We follow Leticia as she deals with a supernatural entity after seeing it during her father’s funeral.

There is a slow burn of building dread throughout the early scenes of The Blue Drum, with a German expressionist style, and some slow tracking shots employed.

There is plenty more going on with Leticia and her relationship with her now-deceased father, which as with many family squabbles – always rears its head at the funeral or another gathering.

The Blue Drum feels like a deep character study of a woman trying to process loss while also dealing with something unimaginable.

The film carries a real atmosphere, which will unnerve viewers.

The Blue Drum screens as part of HollyShorts Film Festival 2023.
