The Path (Fantasia Fest 2023) review

The old saying is two wrongs don’t make a right, but try telling that to Richard, our protagonist in The Path, a new short from Jean-Paul Botelho.

The former police officer decides to take revenge on the person who murdered his granddaughter, which given his background is probably ill-advised.

What we get is an extremely raw portrayal of grief, with Botelho not pulling any punches.

As Richard breaks the door down and starts firing is all filmed in silhouette, which is quite effectively, leaving us to imagine even half the carnage unfolding indoors.

Just when you think Botelho has thrown the kitchen sink at us, he provides another gut punch.

The Path will linger in your mind long after the credits roll.

The Path screens as part of Fantasia Fest 2023.
