One trope we just can’t get enough of in horror is the sins of the past coming back to bite people in the behind.
Whether it’s the accidental drowning of a boy in a lake, to running a man off the road after partying too hard on the 4 July, it’s a constant and we love it!
Now we come to Ryan Maddox’s short Fungus, with a father and son facing up to their past misdemeanours and the blood that must pay for them.
After they capture something fantastical in the forest nearby, they set in motion a series of events which could prove deadly for more than just them.
What Maddox does well is plonking us into this world where unnatural things exist and you wholly believe it; it’s great world-building.
The creature design here is fantastic and will really get under your skin, with its lizard-like noises and horrific appearance.
Fungus proves that actions can have deadly consequences.
This is fantasy horror at its best.
Fungus screens as part of Fantasia Fest 2023.
