Transylvanie (Fantasia Fest 2023) review

I’ve always thought it must be hard to live in places as synonymous as Transylvania.

You can imagine, it must get tiring seeing cheap Dracula merch on every street corners, looking to entice tourists.

Our short here from Rodrigue Huart focuses on a young girl Ewa, living in the Romanian city, who dreams of becoming a vampire and running off with the local boy she has taken a shine to.

She prays to the ‘Master’ to let her become a creature of the night to escape the loneliness and desolation of her life. Given the posters on her wall, you get the feeling she’s watched too many vampire movies and read too much Anne Rice.

Transylvanie definitely gave me the vibes of Let The Right One In, capturing the cold, desolate high rises of the city and the loneliness of potentially being a creature of the night.

Quickly, with one shocking moment this descends into chaos, and ensures that Ewa’s threats may not be just quotes from Bram Stoker after all.

This a short film that really goes there.

Transylvanie screens as part of Fantasia Fest 2023.
