Only Yourself to Blame (Fantasia Fest 2023) review

Sadly, nowadays, the idea of walking home alone, especially if you are a woman, is daunting.

For Noomi Yates’ latest short, we follow a couple of women heading home after a night on the tiles. One is clearly more drunk than the other, and she is put in a taxi to ensure she gets home safely. This leaves the other girl to walk the rest of the way home through the eerily quiet streets.

When she spots a gang of youths on the street she decides to take an alternative route, to save any trouble.

The situation becomes even creepier as she appears to be being followed by a replica of herself, who can only mimick her actions. Given this is the middle of the night, only adds another layer of terror.

Yates’ short raises questions about victim blaming and the paranoia women must feel every day, bringing it all together for a harrowing short.

Only Yourself to Blame screens as part of Fantasia Fest 2023.
