Lollygag (Fantasia Fest 2023) review

Childhood memories can be weird when you start to age.

You often look back on something traumatic at the time with rose-tinted glasses or a moment of happiness is tainted by future life experiences.

In Tij D’oyen’s short Lollygag, we recount a woman’s encounter with the boy next door from her childhood.

American Horror Story fans will recognise Isaac Cole Powell from the most recent NYC season of the show, as the neighbour who becomes the focal point of this recollection.

He becomes the girl’s minor obsession as he lives an outlandish lifestyle of drinking, smoking and having sex with both men and women in view of his nosy neighbour.

Lollygag is a sobering look at obsession and the dark places it can take us to.

Lollygag screens as part of Fantasia Fest 2023.
