Le Temple (Fantasia Fest 2023) review

I’ve always thought of the idea of being in a submarine as being one of the most claustrophobic experiences.

I mean you are trapped in a large vessel plus you can be hundreds of feet under the ocean.

In Alain Fournier’s Le Temple, we open with a message being sent to the surface telling the story of the inhabitants, so the mind is already thinking how bad is this gonna be?

We follow the German navy in the aftermath of torpedoing the Victory vessel that was travelling from New York to Liverpool. What I didn’t mention at this stage is that this is a HP Lovecraft tale, so you know it’s gonna get wild at some point.

After the Brits start to retaliate with bombs of their own, the crew go deep to evade being sunk. The crew begin acting strange and trust starts to disintegrate amongst them, but what is causing this?

Fournier’s animated short looks incredible and relies as much on visuals as telling its story; always a good combination. There are some haunting shots, including one of the bodies of crews sinking to the bottom of the ocean.

Le Temple is just stunning to look, certainly a short to admire.

Le Temple screens as part of Fantasia Fest 2023.
