Familiar (short) review

Coming straight out of the 1940s is David Ellison’s stylish new short Familiar.

We were quite lucky to screen this fantastic gothic treat as part of the Bloody Flicks Awards in February this year.

As the title suggests we follow a man who has become isolated in a mansion, at the beck and call of an ancient vampire.

Familiar carries its own style but is also pulsating with dread, as Ellison really captures the paranoia and constant terror this man, Richard is living in.

He plays music to drown out the screams of others.

Whereas something like What We Do In The Shadows plays the familiar role as more of a slapstick comedic arc, this short is dark and disturbing from the get-go.

You may think the vampire sub-genre is too saturated but think again.

Familiar really put the fangs back into the vampire.
