Pitched as an ode to 80s horror, Erik Bloomquist, who is becoming quite the maestro of low-budget horror, returns with She Came From The Woods.
Teaming up with brother Carson on the writing duties, we head to Camp Briarbrook where a bunch of teen camp counsellors unknowingly unleash an urban legend which turns bloody.
What the Bloomquist’s do so well here, is give us rich characters to like or loathe. It’s quite refreshing to see such fleshed-out characters in the slasher format.
Even though it is set at a summer camp, She Came From The Woods is far more supernatural than say Friday the 13th or Sleepaway Camp, but it does have a similar kill-by-kill format.
When the killing does start it’s not for the faint-hearted, with the blood flying everywhere. There is even one truly gnarly burn effect that will have some viewers, me included, wincing.
She Came From The Woods also has some great twists up his sleeve, with at least two generally WTF moments.
The film is also rich in black comedy and while its ending is slightly abrupt, the journey is certainly worth it.
I want a ticket to Camp Briarbrook next summer!
