New Religion (Gasp Horror Festival) review

New Religion came highly recommended by first-time director Keishi Kondo.

Playing with some big ideas, the main basis of the plot revolves around a woman who loses her daughter in a tragic accident in the opening reel.

She struggles to put her life back together in the aftermath, but when she starts working as a call girl she encounters a strange man who gives her the opportunity to undo the past but at a cost.

I should state right here that New Religion is a extreme slow-burn, and those wanting something a bit punchier should probably look elsewhere.

It has a trippy and uneven style, and the big ideas it pitches don’t always land.

New Religion is sprinkled with haunting imagery and a searing soundtrack but it doesn’t seem to fulfil the potential it started out with.

New Religion screened as part of Gasp Horror Festival 2023.
