Every Time I Die (Gasp Horror Fest) review

Opening the first-ever Gasp Horror Festival was the Columbian feature Every Time I Die, which was a mix of heartbreaking, poignant, bizarre and surreal.

The film speaks very much to the trans person’s experience in Columbia and highlights the hardships people face for just wanting to live their lives.

We hear the different stories of a number of transwomen, interdispersed with music video depictions of death which aim to shock. At one point we have castration via cannibalism, for example.

The sound design of the film is incredible, but it is when it delves into those more outlandish sequences that it suffers.

The devil is in the detail, and Every Time I Die works best when its a straight-up drama about these transwomen, and how they have overcome so much and are still here.

More a film to be admired rather than enjoyed.

Every Time I Die screened as part of Gasp Horror Festival 2023.
