Hear me out….Richard Brake as Freddy Krueger

Many of us have suspected it for a while, but it sounds like Robert Englund is finally done with Freddy Krueger.

His guest appearance in The Goldbergs in 2018 looks like the last time he will don the deadly finger knives, the stripey sweater and fedora.

Perhaps, with Englund clearing the way for a new Freddy, more speculation can begin on who can take on the mantle next. News on the Nightmare series has been deafening quiet, but perhaps with this news, those with pitches for a new film can start to consider a new face for Krueger.

There is no right or wrong answer but how about Richard Brake?

He has become a well-known face in the genre over the past decade or so, with roles in plenty of Rob Zombie projects plus Game of Thrones, The Mandalorian, Tremors: Shrieker Island and the superb Vesper.

Anyone who has seen Zombie’s 31 knows Brake has a sinister grin tailor-made to be one of horror’s top villains. His elevated cheekbones can sometimes give him a gaunt expression, which you can just imagine adding burnt prosthetics.

He showed he can do sympathetic in Vesper and nearly unspoken sinister in Barbarian but also has a knack for comedy in Zombie’s The Munsters.

Brake has a gangly frame, much similar to Robert Englund during his Krueger glory years, it’s just if he can pull off the Freddy stance and more importantly the voice.

Freddy’s voice and his delivery are almost as important as his look. For example, Jackie Earle Haley’s grovelling delivery was sinister enough, but he was let down by an average script and poor makeup effects.

Brake is 58, and having established his name in the horror genre, now couldn’t be a better time to hit the big time.
