From Drew Barrymore to Lucy Hale to Jenna Ortega, the Scream franchise has long established itself as having iconic and star-studded opening scenes! With Scream VI now available to Download & Keep and coming soon to physical formats, what better excuse to round up and run through the Scream Queens from one of horror’s greatest franchises.
*WARNING* major Scream spoilers below!
Scream VI – Laura (Samara Weaving)
In the latest bloody installment, Scream VI opens with Laura who is sitting at a bar in New York City about to meet her date from an app. When the date calls to explain they’re lost, Laura goes outside to help them find the right location. After becoming more suspicious and even walking down an alleyway, Laura is brutally murdered by Ghostface. This kill is chilling to the bone and a reminder that Ghostface will not stop at just a simple phone call!
Scream (2022) – Tara (Jenna Ortega)
This attack is the most violent (in our opinion) of the entire franchise and Jenna Ortega’s piercing screams are definitely responsible for making this scene so frightening!
With a game that is very similar to that of the original, Tara is quizzed by Ghostface on the Stab franchise as her best friend’s life is threatened. Tara then comes face-to-face with Ghostface in a terrifying ordeal and is luckily saved by the police but with horrific injuries.
Scream 4 – Trudie (Shenae Grimes-Beech), Sherrie (Shenae Grimes-Beech), Marnie (Britt Robertson), Jenny (Aimee Teegarden), Chloe (Kristen Bell) and Rachel (Anna Paquin).
What’s better than one scream queen? LOADS of Scream queens… Scream 4 features many famous faces in the 3 parts of the opening scene and sees a kill from someone other than Ghostface!
The kills of Trudie, Sherrie and Jenny are pretty grotesque and all very textbook Ghostface murders with warning phone calls beforehand which makes Scream 4 great in having such an exciting start to another slasher movie in the franchise! But, perhaps the best kill of the opening doesn’t come from Ghostface with a mask on; when Rachel won’t quietly watch the Stab franchise, Chloe (Kristen Bell) becomes impatient and stabs her to keep her quiet… brutal!
Scream 3 – Christine (Kelly Rutherford)
In Scream 3, Ghostface goes after Cotton’s girlfriend Christine after he refuses to give up Sidney’s location. Poor Christine then gets taunted by Ghostface (who pretends to be Cotton) and then becomes confused when the real Cotton appears to warn her. The tragic death of both of them is definitely grim and poor Christine barely gets a chance to get her opening Scream queen moment!
Scream 2 – Maureen (Jada Pinkett)
Think you’re safe in a crowded cinema? Think again! This opening kill is absolutely terrifying. When Maureen goes to see Stab with her boyfriend at the movies, he leaves to go to the bathroom where he is stabbed by Ghostface. Ghostface then takes his seat next to Maureen and carries on watching the movie. After Maureen realises that it isn’t her boyfriend, Ghostface stabs her in a cinema full of people except no one can hear her as everyone else is screaming at the movie and dressed like Ghostface too!
Scream (1996) – Casey (Drew Barrymore)
‘What’s your favourite scary movie?’ is an all-timer line from a truly iconic film and the opening scene wouldn’t be so amazing without Drew Barrymore’s incredible performance as Casey. Drew Barrymore was originally asked to play Sidney Prescott but she turned it down as she believed it would be much more terrifying for her to die at the beginning and we very much agree!
This movie changed horror by not allowing the audience to feel safe from the very start. From the first answer of the phone to the chilling ‘I wanna know who I’m looking at’ quote from Ghostface, this scene makes the Scream franchise as iconic as it is for a reason!
Scream VI is available to Download & Keep now and on DVD, Blu-ray™ & 4K Ultra HD™ from 10th July.
