When something is labelled ‘Do not watch/listen’, it is basically cat nip in a horror film.
In Bryan M Ferguson’s micro-short Earworm, we open with a heavily bandaged man driving through the streets and he becomes tempted by the aforementioned cassette tape.
Sensibly he throws it out the window, but the tape is picked up by a lucky or in this case unlucky bystander.
At less than 100 seconds, Earworm does an amazing job or shrinking its narrative into a bite-size segment, whilst still feeling like its telling a wider story.
The titular Earworm is actually adjoined to the tape which plays in inaudible tune, but once freed it goes after its new victims.
The practical effects are superb and Earworm manages to capture all of its mad cap insanity so quickly it will have you begging for more.
Earworm screens as part of Cabane a Sang Film Festival 2023.
