What instantly strikes you about Carl Shanahan’s short South is just how beautifully filmed it is.
Given the title, we follow a grizzled man making his way through a snowstorm in forested lands heading south.
With a twisted look on his face, is this man seeking to get away from something or hunting something or someone himself?
After hearing screams nearby, the man gets his sharpened spear and gun ready for any kind of attack that could be coming.
‘South’ exists in a grey area where it feels like everyone has their own dark secret, so when characters meet we’re not quite sure who to root for.
This short also proves that nothing looks as twisted as blood soaked snow.
