Smiley Face (Salem Horror Fest 2023) review

When you are tied up in a barn and clearly under some kind of threat, I guess that’s a good time to be asking for divine intervention.

We open with said girl, pleading for help while her companion Chloe appears to be getting ripped to shreds outside.

François Ricard-Sheard’s Smiley Face quickly establishes the isolation of this farmhouse where it appears that multiple people are being held hostage/killed. The cinematography really captures the backwoods feel and griminess of the location.

We get glimpses from afar of the threat, we can assume the titular Smiley Face, plus the aftermath of its previous victims.

Make no mistake this monster is unrelenting and Ricard-Sheard builds some excellent tension during its first full appearance on-screen.

Loaded with haunting images and plenty of gore, Smiley Face is an engrossing and gruesome watch.

Smiley Face screens as part of Salem Horror Fest 2023.
