Incomplete (Salem Horror Fest 2023) review

I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone spring into action as quickly as the lead from Zoey Martinson’s Incomplete, which screens as part of Salem Horror Fest.

He literally catapults out of bed and down the stairs, eager to turn off an alarm that woke him up. On his charge to the living room, we see a family portrait of a caucasian family plus stickers for the Black Lives Matter movement, which gives us an incline of where this could be going.

We learn quite quickly that some certain rules and laws must be obeyed in this world, or there will be consequences.

Incomplete is also sprinkled with some great comedy, as we learn more about the character’s predicament. One of my favourites is another character telling him, ‘no one told you to get a degree in costume design’.

This short plays with some big ideas and uses similar plot strands as films such as Get Out, regarding racial tension only improves the viewing experience. Plus, the final shot is truly haunting.
