Hen (Salem Horror Fest 2023) review

Stag and hen do’s can sometimes be an awkward melting pot of personalities, especially if all parties don’t really know each other.

There can be bitchy comments or in some cases, even violence, as people from different social circles simply don’t get on.

In Alice Tovey’s Hen, we have the scenario where one of the bride-to-be’s hens Gem and is queer and is clearly having to stomach a lot of the crude talk about men and the like from the other rather boisterous hens.

We find out she is vegan and also doesn’t do shots, which immediately gets the other hens’ backs up.

Hen becomes darkly comic as everything about the hen party has penises, whether it’s the straws for drinks or a giant cake shaped like you-know-what.

Surprisingly this takes a turn into body horror, after Gem finds a strange growth on her chest, but is this a result of the hen party or something more sinister?

Littered with social commentary and loaded with laughs, Hen is bound to be a crowd pleaser.

Hen screens as part of Salem Horror Fest 2023.
