I have to say I haven’t quite seen a film as bizarre as Abruptio in a while.
It isn’t just the fact the whole feature is played out by puppets; once get past this there is plenty more gonzo action to keep you engrossed. Is it a horror? Is it a comedy? Is it gory as hell? All of the above.
We follow Les, a man in a dead-end job, who has just been dumped by his girlfriend and is continually nagged by his overbearing mother. When he finds out that he may have a bomb implanted into his neck he begins to carry out a series of missions.
He is forced to team up with a rogue gallery of accomplices as the tasks only get bloodier and more surreal, in some cases.
You have to admire the vision and scope of Abruptio, as it leaves nothing on the sidelines and really throws the kitchen sink at the viewer. Does it all stick? Debatable but you have to give kudos for taking so many wild swings with 94 minutes.
We have bombs that explode people’s heads, aliens looking to take over the planet by impregnating the human race; you wouldn’t get this crazy in a peak Tarantino film.
Evan Marlowe has created a film that will be talked about for some time.
Abruptio screened as part of Panic Fest 2023.
