Otherkin (Panic Fest 2023) review

Going back to a place from your childhood is never good news in horror.

In Dawson Taylor’s Otherkin, we follow a daughter returning to her former haunt in a coastal town alongside her mother and her partner.

We find out the daughter Scarlett is meeting her real mother, after being adopted at a young age. Immediately on her arrival something just feels off with this whole scenario.

Things get a bit weird when she is shown an old photo album with some bizarre cult-ish photos, and then finds out when is trapped there for the night. Given this short is only 12 minutes, Taylor does an excellent job of fleshing out this story in super quick time, alluding to larger themes.

Otherkin goes to some unexpected places, with some imagery that will certainly unnerve some viewers plus a haunting final shot.

Otherkin screens as part of Panic Fest 2023.
