The Trunk (Panic Fest 2023) review

It’s never good news when your cold open is a set of characters exploring or uncovering something in the woods at night.

Said discovery in Travis Laidlow’s The Trunk is the titular trunk, which is covered in chains, which is always a good sign…

While one of our duo is keen to get the trunk open, the other wants to rest given how arduous their journey was. Curiosity of course gets the better of one of them, and the trunk is opened; but what was so unsafe that it needed chaining down?

The Trunk is beautifully shot with a lot of focus on tight shots, giving a sense of claustrophobia, which could be a metaphor for being tracked in a box like the villain of our piece.

A mix of implied witchcraft and survival horror, The Trunk is an engrossing experience.

The Trunk screens as part of Panic Fest 2023.
