Ginny Reaper (Monsters in Film Festival) review

Even Grim Reapers deserve a vacation,

Especially if you’ve been working for over 100 years without a break. Niamh McKeown’s Ginny Reaper repurposes one of the reapers as a self-aware ‘girl boss’, in a reality TV-style documentary send-up.

All to gain some extra social followers.

What our titular Ginny Reaper hasn’t bargained on was her lost love from 300 years ago appearing at her vacation home.

Sprinkled with wry humour, we hear about her working shifts, how people pass over into the afterlife plus lots in between.

Tanya Reynolds is truly fantastic as the self-absorbed and very funny Ginny, who just wants to catch a break but her past keeps coming back to haunt her. Ironic, given her job title.

Despite all the comical shenanigans, Ginny Reaper carries an important message about not running from your past; even if you’re on vacation.

Ginny Reaper screened as part of the Monsters in Film Festival 2023.
