Is there anything worse than being trapped on a long journey with an annoying passenger?
This is the basic premise of Simone Smith’s short The Mobius Trip, which sees a family of four travel to a wedding, with tensions rising as the drive continues.
It’s quite clear from the outset that the family dynamic here is skewered and the foursome are just annoyed by being in each other’s presence. It’s basically like the Christmas family break condensed into a car journey.
Smith focuses on small details and as the film goes on, it feels like these insignificant moments become heightened.
What could have been quite mundane becomes abstract and trippy, with excellent use of the radio and music to explain the changing mood and insanity which feels trapped in the car.
The Mobius Trip is arthouse horror and its best; a compelling watch.
The Mobius Trip screened as part of the Monsters in Film Festival 2023.
