If the pandemic has taught us nothing else, it’s that working too hard in a job you just don’t enjoy isn’t worth it.
In Savannah Hunter-Reeves’ short Night Work, we follow a workaholic new mother who is targeted by a sinister entity whilst working late at home.
There is a commentary about the guilt of new mother’s going back to work when their child is still very young.
Once Night Work has laid the groundwork we get some subtle scares, including the noise of someone typing away at her laptop, knowing her husband is away. Given her status, effectively home alone this only makes the sequences more chilling.
There is one sequence that will genuinely send a chill down your spine, that I won’t be spoilt here but trust me you will know when it happens.
Hunter-Reeves really crafts the scenes and is fantastic at using the whole frame, having us search for clues when things start to go awry.
Night Work is stellar stuff that will demand repeat viewings.
Night Work screens as part of the Overlook Film Festival 2023.
