Right from the first scenes of Olivia Loccisano’s First Blood you just get the feeling we are getting a film that could shock some.
We open on Mia, in here loudly pink bedroom, with cross all over the wall plus various pictures of Jesus Christ all over; you get the feeling she’s a fan of big J.
The titular First Blood referred to is Mia’s first period, but little does she and us know that could set off a chain of events that could change her forever.
There is a burgeoning social commentary on how womanhood can change a person, and obviously being a horror film we focus on a more sinister motif.
Suffice to say that First Blood is here to make some audiences feel uncomfortable; and without giving anything away you will know what I’m getting at once you see it.
First Blood is about discovery and accepting your fate to some extent, and its conclusion leaves it open to interpretation.
First Blood screens as part of Overlook Film Festival 2023.
