We often seen the trope of the disappointed parent when their kids come out in movies, but what happens when they are too okay with their child’s sexuality?
This is the question posed in Michael Schwartz’s short Snatched, which forms part of the queer horror selection at this year’s Overlook Film Festival.
Horror fans will recognise Misha Osherovich from their turn in the fantastic slasher Freaky from 2020, plus Tatiana Maslany who many will clock as the lead of sci-fi series Orphan Black.
Osherovich plays our lead Joey, who after almost getting caught with their boyfriend confides in their parents about his sexuality, little does they know everything is about to change as multiple meteors crashland as they cry themselves to sleep.
It becomes quite obvious that Snatched is going for the satirical approach, with plenty of laughs, poking fun at archetypes left, right and centre.
Think of it like the queer version of Invasion of the Bodysnatchers.
As the plot gets more and more bonkers, the more fun Snatched becomes, including one fantastic sequence on a car ride to school for Joey and their friends.
A fantastic satire on the queer experience with added aliens, what’s not to like?
Snatched screens as part of the Overlook Film Festival 2023.
