Bitten, A Tragedy (Overlook Film Fest) review

Right from the first frames of Bitten, A Tragedy, you can feel the punk spirit oozing out of this short film.

Monika Estrella Negra, our writer, director and star is aiming at an alternative crowd, with a hypnotic filmmaking style.

Negra has clearly watched plenty of Argento and Gialli, employing some fantastic and vibrant lighting which only add to this dream-like quality which permeates many scenes. We are thrown some fantastic and surreal imagery that wouldn’t look out of place in a David Lynch film.

Is Bitten, a Tragedy about hidden desires? Lust? Probably a bit of both. I won’t spoil any surprises here.

We follow a young girl who navigates an alternative nightclub, where she meets an androgynous person, who she decides to go home with.

It takes a little to get going but once Bitten, A Tragedy shifts gear it is a surreal and compelling watch.

Bitten, A Tragedy screens as part of the Overlook Film Festival 2023.
