Mother Superior (Glasgow Frightfest 2023) review

When an orphan goes in search of answers about her biological family at the secluded home of an ageing Baroness; you get the feeling she will get more than she bargains for.

This is a snapshot of Marie Alice Wolfszahn’s Mother Superior, a beautifully shot and tight feature which screens as part of Glasgow Frightfest.

Opening with a recorded tape of our orphan in question Sigrid, she begins to recite her story to the authorities.

While at a slight 71 minutes, Mother Superior is quite a slow burn, sprinkling in some striking and haunting imagery before playing its full hand in a twisted finale.

Mother Superior is made by its two central performances from Isabella Handler as Sigrid and Inga Maux as the Baroness. Maux is able to convey the Baroness’ failing body and almost flip on a coin to a more haunted side to herself.

Mother Superior is certainly a lesson in be careful what you wish for.
